I’m in Year 9 and a few months ago, someone from Vaka came to my school to speak about careers in construction. I didn’t know what to expect and I thought it would be about bricklaying or building roads. But instead, I saw a woman who looked like me, who talked about design, problem-solving, and working with purpose. I was hooked. After that talk, I knew I wanted to learn more. I asked my teacher how to get in touch, and that’s how I ended up doing work experience at Studio Booth.During my week, I helped review architectural drawings and learned how planning permission submissions are put together. I even went on a site visit to check if what was built matched the plans including counting bricks to support material checks! It was hands-on, real, and nothing like the textbooks. I always thought you had to follow a certain path to end up in a career like this. But seeing someone with a similar background doing what I want to do gave me the confidence to try. Everyone at Studio Booth made me feel capable, included, and curious.I now know that construction is not just an option but a space where I belong. That school talk didn’t just inspire me. It helped me imagine my future and a career in STEM.
